Automated and Personalized Orthosis for the Treatment of Foot Drop
AFO
This work presents the development of an automated orthosis designed for the treatment of all types of foot drop, a neuromuscular condition that hinders dorsiflexion — that is, the lifting of the front part of the foot during walking.
The orthosis integrates pressure and inertial sensors that identify the different phases of the gait cycle, activating a motorized system that lifts the foot in a controlled manner with independent adjustments. Powered by rechargeable batteries, the system aims to improve the user’s stability and natural walking pattern.
The orthosis is customized through 3D scanning and additive manufacturing, ensuring a precise anatomical fit for each patient.
The project is structured into three sequential phases to guarantee functionality and reliability: test bench, functional prototype, and final orthosis. Each phase covers the mechanical and electronic design, manufacturing, and implementation of the control system.
