Manual propulsion system for wheelchairs

Mekeid
The primary objective of this work is to enhance the functionality and performance of the existing Kate Reed Hand Drive wheelchair propulsion system. Current systems exhibit inefficiencies in torque transfer and forward motion, which hinder overall performance and leave significant room for innovation. Addressing these limitations is critical for improving the mobility and comfort of wheelchair users. This project proposes a mechanical redesign incorporating a planetary gear system to optimize the torque applied to the rear wheels. By increasing propulsion efficiency, this enhancement aims to improve the wheelchair's dynamic performance during forward motion. A comparative analysis of the wheelchair's behavior with and without this attachment will be conducted, focusing on performance metrics and user comfort. The findings will provide insights into the effectiveness of the proposed design in achieving a more efficient, user-friendly propulsion system.
