MediaLab recreates Asturian apples by means of photogrammetry and 3D printing
Manzanas 3D
The Regulatory Council of the designation of origin Cider of Asturias poses the following challenge: The apples used for the production of cider in Asturias are harvested in the last quarter of the year and we can see them until March. In order to be able to see them the rest of the months, a 3D printing technique is used. The process starts with a scanning of the apples during the winter. Thus, the geometry of the apple is obtained. It is then 3D printed, trying to obtain a weight similar to that of the original apple. Finally it is carefully painted, keeping the original colors.

  • To obtain the digital model of the blocks we use photogrammetry (from a large number of photographs, approximately 80), we generate a three-dimensional model.
  • The next step is the PLA printing of the apple, trying to find an interior filling that matches the original weight of the apple. And finally, the aesthetic recreation of each family of apples. For this, oil paints are used...and a lot of skill!
